Should I let my child use ChatGPT? A parent's guide

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other generative AI tools are everywhere. What's actually risky for a Class 3–7 child, what's actually useful, and what you can do practically — without banning or blindly allowing.

If your child has not asked you about ChatGPT yet, they will soon. Or they have already used it without asking. Either way, the question on every Indian parent’s mind is the same: should I let my child use it, and if so, how?

The answer is more nuanced than “yes” or “no”. Here is an honest, practical guide.

What ChatGPT (and Claude, Gemini, Copilot) actually are

These are Large Language Models — pattern-completion engines that have read enormous amounts of text and learned to predict what word should come next. Strung together at scale, this prediction looks remarkably like a human writing. Ask one to explain photosynthesis to a Class 6 child and it will produce a fluent, plausible explanation in three seconds.

They are not encyclopaedias. They sometimes make things up — fluently, confidently, and wrongly. They have no concept of “truth”; they have a concept of what answer sounds right. This distinction matters enormously when a child is using them.

What OpenAI itself says about kids

OpenAI’s terms of service require ChatGPT users to be at least 13 years old, with parental consent required for users under 18. So strictly speaking, your Class 3–7 child should not be using it without your explicit involvement. Most other consumer AI assistants have similar age policies. They are not enforced by ID checks — they are enforced by your supervision.

This is the first practical answer: a Class 3–7 child should not use ChatGPT alone. With you sitting beside them, occasionally — a different question.

Real risks worth taking seriously

Hallucinated answers presented confidently. Your child asks “what year did India get independence?” — fine, ChatGPT will get this right. But ask something more subtle, like “what’s the longest river in India?” and you might get a plausible but slightly wrong answer. A child has no way to know.

Cheating becoming the default. A child who learns to ask ChatGPT for the answer to every homework question will not develop the cognitive muscle of struggling with a problem. The struggle is the learning. Outsourcing it produces children who can submit homework but can’t reason.

Inappropriate content slipping through. Major AI assistants have safety filters, but they are imperfect. A persistent or unlucky child can encounter content unsuitable for their age.

Data and privacy. When your child types into ChatGPT, that text goes to OpenAI’s servers in the United States. OpenAI says it does not train on consumer chats by default in 2026 — but the data is still processed abroad. Indian children’s data crossing borders without parental thought is something to consider.

Emotional substitution. A small but growing concern: children using AI as a friend or confidant in ways that displace human relationships. AIs are very good listeners — too good, perhaps, for a developing emotional ecosystem.

Real benefits, also worth being honest about

Patient, on-demand explanations. A child confused at 9 PM about a Maths concept their teacher rushed through can get a clear, calm explanation. This is genuinely valuable.

A creative collaborator. Asking ChatGPT to help brainstorm a story, or to suggest five ways a science project could be improved, develops thinking — if the child still does the work.

Exposure to a tool they will use professionally. This is the “future skill” argument. It’s true. The Class 7 child who has thoughtfully used AI will have an advantage over the one who has not.

A practical framework

Forget “yes” or “no”. Use this five-rule framework instead.

Rule 1: Sit with them, especially the first 10 times. Make AI use a together activity, not an alone activity. Your presence is the safety net, the curator, and the conversation prompt all at once.

Rule 2: Use it to explore, not to do homework. “Explain to me how a model rocket works” — yes. “Solve question 5 of my Maths exercise” — no. The first builds curiosity. The second builds dependence.

Rule 3: Always ask the verification question. After the AI answers anything factual, your child should ask: “How would I check if that’s true?” This habit, built early, is the single most important AI literacy skill. It is also exactly what the CBSE Class 5 AI curriculum teaches.

Rule 4: Time-box it. A 15-minute exploration session, not an open tab. The same rule that applies to most screen time.

Rule 5: Pick the right tool for the right age. ChatGPT was designed for adults and is not optimised for children. Whichever tool you choose, the underlying principle is the same: AI is becoming a fundamental skill, and your child will be using it for the next 70 years. The question is not whether. The question is how.

For a Class 3–7 child: don’t let them use ChatGPT alone. Sit beside them sometimes. Use it to explore, not to do homework. Always ask the verification question. Pick a tool built for children when one is appropriate.
